The wheel was made of a simple block of roughened granite, with an upper working surface that was entirely polished and slightly concave. The object was placed on the ground. The grain was crushed and ground naturally with the help of a grinding stone called a "wheel", in an oscillating movement, hence the generic term "reciprocating grinding wheel".
