Statuette de divinité assise

Strasbourg (67) - Musée archéologique

© Musées de Strasbourg, M. Bertola

This female figure, seated in a high-backed chair, is a representation of a deity. Carved in fine limestone, this mother goddess symbolizes both abundance and fertility. This type of representation was common in Roman Gaul, where the Matres presided over the protection of individuals, but also of the whole household.
