Penelle à fond plat / Couzonnaire

Lyon [69] - Musée Gadagne

© Gilles Aymard, musée d'histoire de Lyon - Gadagne

This penelle could have been used to transport stones from the Couzon quarry, north of Lyon. Hence its nickname of Couzonnaire. The penelles were very much used in the ports for the crossing from one bank to the other, and were most often used to go down the river and come back up empty. Being able to navigate with heavy loads in little water, they were omnipresent on the Saône in the 18th century.
