The MHL - Gadagne invites you to discover the history of Lyon through 4 exhibitions. "Portraits of Lyon" gives essential landmarks to understand the contemporary city. Accessible to all audiences from 5 years old, "Les Pieds dans l'eau" tells the story of the inhabitants and their waterways, in the light of environmental issues. November 17, 2022: discover the new exhibition of the museum around the industry and the worker's memory.

Unique museum of France with an international collection, the MAM - Gadagne gathers more than 300 puppets, costumes, sets of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Many works come from contemporary companies in activity, which gives the museum a very modern and playful side. You can adopt the artists' point of view and try your hand at manipulation at the end of the tour. In the city of Punch, an essential visit not to be missed!

Penelle à fond plat / Couzonnaire

Modern period [1492 / 1789]

This penelle could have been used to transport stones from the Couzon quarry, north of Lyon. Hence its nickname of Couzonnaire. The penelles were very much used in the ports for the crossing from one bank to the other, and were most often used to go down the river and come back up empty. Being able to navigate with heavy loads in little water, they were omnipresent on the Saône in the 18th century.

Pirogue-vivier

Modern period [1492 / 1789]

This pirogue-vivier, carved from a single tree trunk, was unearthed along with 15 other ancient boats during the excavations of the Saint-Georges parking lot in Lyon. This exceptional discovery testifies to the important activity of the nearby port of Sablet. Thanks to its central trap, this dugout canoe was most certainly used to transport and preserve fish caught in the Saône River while it was still alive, until it was sold on the floating markets or not.

Soulier à tige haute

This shoe was discovered at the site of the old Port Sablet, on the banks of the Saône. Perhaps it belonged to one of the inhabitants of the many houses along the waterfront in the 13th century? Perhaps it was made in one of the leather workshops that were located there?

Mule à crevés

Modern period [1492 / 1789]

This mule was found uncovered, where during the Renaissance the ditch of a rampart was used as a dumping ground. The incisions called "crevices" that decorate it were very fashionable in the 16th century and allowed to show the precious fabric of the stockings that were worn. It probably belonged to a person of fairly high social standing.

Modern period [1492 / 1789]

The sculpture of this knife, typical of the Renaissance, is quite exceptional. On the handle appears a dog's head with large eyes, jowls and hanging ears. A braid of interlacing is developed on the handle itself.
