Façade en stuc décoré

Autun [71] Musée Rolin

5 parts of the 4 stucco façades of the room have been reconstructed with numerous fragments of polychrome stucco (dark blue and red).
This area, which we call plinth, is crowned by a wide intermediate cornice that marks the transition with the middle area. It is also attested on both walls and consists of three richly decorated registers. A row of ovals precedes a frieze where bucrania and protomes alternate, separated by a hanging plant garland. The last register is decorated with a frieze of confronted dolphins separated by a rooster.
According to the preserved remains, we were able to count at least four arches on wall A. Very slender, they are covered with a semicircular arch. They are 15 cm deep, which forms, on the wall, a series of niches separated by pillars that support the arches of the middle and upper zone, which respects the vertical rhythm often observed on Roman decorations, is still marked by a smooth profile cornice.
