This period saw the appearance and spread of Man throughout the world from his African cradle. In Western Europe, the Lower Paleolithic concerns a phase of more than 500,000 years (approximately 800,000 to 300,000 B.C.) inscribed in the first part of the Middle Pleistocene and characterized by the progressive establishment of hominids in the north from the Mediterranean Basin.
